General description of the collection: The Allen M. Burdett, Jr., photograph collection consists of photos on the activities of the 101st Airborne Division and of Brigadier General Burdett as commander of the 101st Aviation Brigade in Vietnam in 1969. The photos are principally of social functions, ceremonies, presentations, visits with VIPs, and visits to units in the field. There are a few portraits of General Burdett and a series at his retirement as lieutenant general commanding the 5th (Fifth) Army in 1978.

Historical note: The First Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division was sent to Vietnam in 1965. It was the third United States Army unit to arrive. In December of 1967, the remainder of the division was deployed to Bien Hoa, South Vietnam in Operation Eagle Thrust. The 101st was the only army division ever airlifted directly into combat. The Union Barrack-Ades, organized in 1942 by Ada and Ernest L. Grawemeyer, was a USO-type troupe which toured the Third and Fifth Army bases, including, Fort Bragg (North Carolina), Fort Benning (Georgia), Fort Rucker, (Alabama), Fort Benjamin Harrison (Indiana), Fort Carson (Colorado), and Fort Riley (Kansas).
